September, 2020

The Board of Directors meeting of the Haddonfield 65 Club was held on Thursday September 3, 2020. The 65 Club clubhouse was closed due to the Corona virus shutdown. The meeting was conducted remotely using the Zoom program and was set up by Al Schmidt and Richard Bonnette.

President Bill Brown called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM.   Roll was called and twelve board members, plus Al Schmidt were on the call.

The secretary read the August minutes and the Directors approved the minutes as previously distributed and posted.

President’s Comments

Bill Brown informed the Directors that Frank, Roger and Jay have made calls to members to invite them to the fall luncheon.  However, two additional people are required to assist Bob Parsons.  Dave and Bernie volunteered to make the calls.

Bill also informed the Directors he was still searching for a location for the November Wine and Cheese party.  Christ the King Church is a possibility but, if available, requires a $100 insurance policy payment. This was a concern since no fee is charged for the party.  Bill would discuss this with the church and continue looking for a location.

Saul has started writing biographies of recent new members which will be posted in the monthly newsletter.  His first bio is on Phil Kinsey.

Treasurers Report

·         Treasurer Dave Tarditi informed the BOD the club was still in good financial shape.

·         The Directors approved the treasurers report.

Health & Welfare

·         Henry Leimkuhler reported on the following members.

    • Charles Legge was still waiting for a hip replacement
    • Mark Heston had been released from lockdown at his assisted living home
    • Don Beck was still in a lockdown.

Membership

·         Roger Jacobs was unable to attend the meeting because he was still in Canada.

Speakers

  • Frank Lodge informed the Directors he had speakers lined up into next year.

Trips/ Events

  • The October Stag Luncheon at Tavistock will be held outside under a tent.  Attendance will be limited to 80 people and unfortunately spouses will not be invited because of limited space.  The normal attendance is 120 people.  The luncheon cost is $30.
    • Frank proposed 65Club member Richard Bonnette be the speaker.  Rich will perform Mark Twain for the luncheon.  This motion was approved by the Directors.
    • Frank informed the Directors he was having a problem finding someone to play music at the luncheon.  It was mentioned the music was generally for guests, mainly wives, who are not being invited this year thus music was not required.
  • The November Wine and Cheese party is still scheduled if a venue can be found.  See notes under President’s Comments
  • The December Christmas party is still scheduled at the Methodist Church.  Frank will verify with Tom Mervine the day and location have been reserved.  A minster must be requested to speak.  Frank will discuss possible ministers with Roger since Roger has had considerable recent contact with the churches of Haddonfield.
  • No trips have been scheduled for December.

Old Business

  • None

New Business

·         Frank made a proposal to change the unofficial name of the club to The 55 Club.  He felt this would help attract members.  Bernie informed Frank the club’s membership had remained steady for twenty years with the current name. Since the current name has not affected membership and the proposed name created the impression the club was competing with other social clubs, such as the Lions, Frank withdrew his proposal.  The Directors thanked him for the idea and the time he spent in formulating the proposal.

·         There was a discussion among the directors on a possible membership problem.  This is the number of Haddonfield members vs guest members.  The club is attracting more men from outside of Haddonfield than Haddonfield residents.  This limits the number of guest members since guests cannot exceed 15% of the club membership.

    • Mike Underwood informed Henry several golfers were Haddonfield residents but not club members. Henry and Mike will investigate whether these residents will join the club.

·         Mike, who is active in the Historical Society of Haddonfield, wrote and had published an article on early uses of iron for the HSH.

·         The meeting adjourned at 10:34 AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Fred Willis, Secretary
