The Board of Directors meeting of the Haddonfield 65 Club was held on Thursday May 4, 2023. The meeting was held in the 65 Club clubhouse.

President David Tarditi called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM. Dave Tarditi led the directors in the Pledge of Allegiance, singing of God Bless America and provided a prayer.

Roll was called and thirteen (13) board members were present.  

Minutes –Fred Willis

• The April minutes, which had been distributed and posted earlier, were approved by the Directors.

President’s Report – David Tarditi

• Spring Luncheon
• Calling members to remind them to attend the luncheon resulted in only two or three additional attendees.
• The latest count is 63 members and spouses and four guests are coming
• Based upon these numbers the club subsidy for the luncheon will be about $200, which had been expected.
• The $250 deposit to Tavistock will be credited to the fall Stag luncheon.
• Urban Promise

o   The club will travel to Urban Promise in Camden on May 16 to meet with the students.

o   The meeting format is currently unknown. Doug Crawford will be contacted on this issue.

 

Treasurers Report – Hank Zaleski

• Hank informed the Directors that a surge in membership renewals and new members occurred in April. As a result, the budget forecast for membership dues for 2023 has been met. Only one member was dropped for not paying dues
• The club has spent $600 on new member activities.  This amount was not budgeted for in 2023 but will be a line item in the 2024 budget.
• There is a small increase in expense for food. This is the inflation effect.
• Dave will present the club’s $1000 high school scholarship award.
• The club’s income and expenses amounts are in accordance with projections and the club is meeting it annual financial plan.

• 4^th of July Parade
• The theme will be `Ty- Our Service Dog’ or `Service Dogs’
• Frank lodge is asking for members to suggest ways to present this theme. He requests emails with suggestions.
• Ty will lead the 65 Club parade entry, if he is available. This must still be confirmed
• There will be a parade committee meeting at the end of June.
• Club Annual Directory
• Bernie informed the directors the directory would be printed by Monday.
• There are numerous positions which require a volunteer to organize the event.
• After considerable discussion some positions were deleted, some were left open and an organizer for Luncheons was found.

The Board of Directors meeting of the Haddonfield 65 Club was held on Thursday April 6, 2023. The meeting was held in the 65 Club clubhouse.

President David Tarditi called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM. Dave Tarditi led the directors in the Pledge of Allegiance, singing of My Country T’is of Thee and provided a prayer.

Roll was called and ten (10) board members were present.  Dave Crawford was present as a guest to talk about Urban Promise.

• The March minutes, which had been distributed and posted earlier, were approved by the Directors.

President’s Report – David Tarditi

• New flag
• Dave suggested that the first person coming to the building should ensure that the new flag is flying. When leaving, that person should either take it down and put it against the bookshelf, or emphasize to someone still there to be sure to stow the flag indoors, as it is a rather vulnerable pluck by the public.
• Urban Promise

o   Dave informed the Directors that Dave Crawford was here to discuss the contact with Urban Promise

• The Mayor’s Monthly call – Dave reviewed some of the topics he covered on the call to illustrate the Diversity and Inclusion efforts of the 65 Club.
• Open House – Dave summarized the excellent results of the Open House. 9 new regular members and 1 guest member have joined as a result. A discussion about the New Member orientation protocol occurred with Bernie reviewing what has happened in the past. The board agreed that Bernie would send that protocol to Chuck Kanupke so that he could re-institute this process with the newest members.
• Joe Galleria has speakers set up for the next 2 months. Joe was also elected to the NJ Athletic Directors Hall of Fame recently.

 

Treasurers Report – Hank Zaleski

• Hank informed the Directors that he closed March’s books early since he was away the last 2 weeks in March.  The club had over $500 in receipts and over $1000 in expenses in March
• 6 regular members have not yet paid their 2023 dues. Follow-up was set up for 5 of them. One will be dropped from the club.
• A line item was created to track “new member activities” so this can be budgeted for in the 2024 forecast.

Dave reported earlier that Joe has speakers set up for at least the next 2 months.

Spring Luncheon - All

• The board discussed the agenda and the need to send out a note to the membership reminding them of the Luncheon and deadline for responding.
• Bernie will get directories prepared for distribution at the luncheon.
• Hank will handle 50/50
• Hank will talk to Bill Brown about coordination of registration table.
• The board also discussed the need to have a luncheon coordinator for the future as this will be Bill’s last one and there are many details that need to be dealt with for future luncheons.

• Bernie recommended ******** for the Bill Hitchens Award for his long-time service to the Pinochle group. The recommendation was unanimously approved. The award will be presented at the Spring Luncheon.
• Doug Crawford gave a summary of the work done to date with the Urban Promise Organization related to the Career Sharing efforts. May 16^th is the target date for a get together where 65 Club volunteers will share career possibilities and experiences with the Urban Promise students.

• Service Dogs

• Chuck brought Ty to the Directors meeting.  Dave Welcomed Ty.

• Urban Promise 

• Dave informed the Directors that Urban Promise was a 501c corporation and therefore the 65 club could legally assist them.  Dave hopes assistance could begin in a month. 

• Roger Jacobs

• Roger reported the Historical Society series on Haddonfield Gas Stations and Automobile Dealerships had ended and was very successful attendance wise. Doug Rauschenberger is working on a book on the subject.

Treasurers Report – Hank Zaleski

• Hank informed the Directors February was a quiet month financially.  Most of the income came from 2023 dues payment and there were few expenses.

• The largest expense was contributions to charities in the name of deceased members. Three members passed away during the month and the total deceased for the year is now six. 

• Twenty-five (25) members paid their dues in February 

• Twelve (12) regular members have not yet paid their 2023 dues

• The Treasurer’s February Report was approved by the board.  

Speakers – Joe Galliera

• Speakers are scheduled through May.

• Joe is looking for someone to present a talk on Electric Vehicles and on solar panels.

• Directors provided Joe with suggestions for an Ice-Skating program and an NFL retired referee.

Membership – Chuck Kanupke

• Chuck initiated a long discussion on possible actions and methods to attract new members. 

• The new members Class of 2022 will be invited to a Meet and Greet meeting (12 to 2 pm) on March 11 at the clubhouse. New member Spouses are invited and so are regular members

• On March 25 a Meet and Greet meeting will be held at the clubhouse for the General Public. Regular members are invited to describe the Club’s activities.

• Chuck suggested the club also target specific niches such as golfing and partially retired men who are working at home and can juggle schedules. Younger men, in particular, are desired.

• There was a suggestion the club revise its name and delete the 65.  One opinion is the 65 reference discourages younger retired men from joining the club.

• A name change affects the club’s by-laws and may have legal consequences with the state, borough, and federal government. The impact will be investigated by several members

• Chuck Suggested the club sponsor and organize an Easter Egg hunt for the young grandchildren of members. 

• Chuck suggested there be more family-oriented club activities which would involve wives. These would include allowing wives to attend meetings through zoom.

• Bill Brown presented an article he wrote explaining the club’s purpose for publication in Haddonfield Today.  The directors made several revision suggestions. The directors authorized $300 to pay for the ad.

Trips/ Events – Bill Brown

• A dinner and ‘Best of Broadway’ show will be held at Spring Lake on April 4.  Sign up to date is 6-8 people who will carpool to the event. 

• Additional bottle openers for speaker gifts have been ordered.

• The Spring Luncheon will be held May 11 at Tavistock. Cost will be about $33 per person. Wives are invited and due to continuing Tavistock renovation, the attendance will be held to 80 people.  The speaker will be Dickie Noles, formerly of the Phillies. The Directors authorized a speaker fee of $300.

•  The Haddonfield Lions Club is holding a Mystery Tour on Tuesday April 11. Transportation will be by school bus and lunch is included. Cost $50 per person.  Contact Bill Brown for details and sign up.

Old Business 

• Bernie installed new batteries in the clubhouse exit lights and a carbon monoxide detector as required by the borough Fire Marshall.  The installations were reviewed by the Fire Marshall and accepted.

• Neal Tully is investigating CPR training for members to operate the club’s defibrillator

New Business

• Chuck requested the club purchase a larger harness for Ty for when he participates in club events. The director’s authorized the purchase of a larger harness, cost about $38.

• The scheduling of Meet and Greet meetings in the clubhouse requires a clubhouse cleaning and reorganization and arrangement of furniture, books etc.  A committee (housekeeping) was formed to determine what furniture and equipment is required to support current and to be determined future activities.  The current library will be donated to the Mable Kay House and the Croc Center in Camden. The club’s records will be reviewed to determine disposition and retention of records. 

• The club’s TV was purchased by Rich Carney.

• All revisions to listings for the annual Club’s directory must be completed by the middle of April

 The Board of Directors meeting of the Haddonfield 65 Club was held on Thursday February 1, 2023. The meeting was held in the 65 Club clubhouse.

President’s Report – David Tarditi

• Service Dogs
• Two weeks ago, the program speaker discussed service dogs.  These dogs are trained to help people who have physical problems.  The dog is trained and assists a person until it is about ten years old and then it retires. The speaker has adopted a service dog she trained and has retired.
• Dave knows the owner and she will permit the dog to be the 65 Club Mascot and attend public events when the 65 Club participates in them.
• The board voted to approve the dog as the 65 Club Mascot. The dog’s name is Tyrone.
• Chuck Kanupke will contact the Retrospect and Haddonfield Sun to announce the new addition to the club.
• Urban Promise

o   Six club members visited the Urban Promise campus in Camden last week and were highly impressed with the work Urban Promise is performing. This laid the basis for an extensive discussion as to whether the club should financially contribute to them, assist in mentoring their students, do something else, do nothing and how to do it. The 65 Club is a social club, not a service club, thus different financial and legal issues apply.

o   After a very extensive and wide-ranging discussion, the board approved Dave would investigate the legal and financial aspect further and make a recommendation at the April BOD meeting

Treasurers Report – Hank Zaleski

• Hank identified an error in the January report which overstated the checking account amount by about $500. This will be corrected and a revised report will be issued.
• Forty (40) regular members have not yet paid their 2023 dues
• The Treasurer’s January Report was approved, upon fixing the error, by the board.

• Two member applications were reviewed and approved for membership.

• Chuck received several comments concerning how to attract new members. Increasing the club’s visibility in Haddonfield is a major suggestion.
• Chuck informed the members the borough is slowly taking over planning and executing many events through the Partnership for Haddonfield.  The borough is looking for volunteers to help at events. Increasing diversity and inclusion is becoming a major goal.
• The club assisting with events is being considered as it could provide access to find new members.
• One plan is the club will hold a Meet and Greet meeting for 2022 new members to introduce them to the various club activities and to meet members.  This meeting will be held March 11 from 12-2 at the Clubhouse.
• Additional Meet and Greet meetings to attract new members will be scheduled later.

 

Trips/ Events – Bill Brown

• A dinner and Broadway show will be held at Spring Lake on April 4.  Cost is $70 per person and transportation will be by carpool.  See the club website for sign up information.

 

Old Business

• Bernie has worked with the borough on their new electronic scheduling system to ensure it works properly and the 65 Club can schedule its use of the clubhouse.  The system is now working and Bernie has scheduled the 65 Club the use of the clubhouse on every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for 2023.
• The Historical Society of Haddonfield will have a gas station presentation on Tuesday February 9 at 9:00 AM at the Mabel Kay house. Members with knowledge of Haddonfield gas stations are requested to contact Roger Jacobs at 908 391 3661 or by email: brogerjacobs@aol.com

The Board of Directors meeting of the Haddonfield 65 Club was held on Thursday January 5, 2023. The meeting was held in the 65 Club clubhouse.

President’s Report – Roger Jacobs

• Thank You – Roger thanked the board for its support and guidance throughout his term of office.  In particular, he thanked his immediate predecessor, Frank Lodge, for his wise advice throughout the year.

Treasurers Report – Hank Zaleski

• The income and expenses for December were almost equal, the largest expense was the Christmas party at about $500.
• For 2022, the club’s operating receipts exceeded the operating expenses by about $1,200.  The clubs’ total assets increased by the same amount.
• The club’s liquid assets increased by about $1000 due to an increase in Flea market sales and Miscellaneous Donations.
• The club’s long-term investments remained about the same but the allocation changed from 3 CDs to 1 CD and an I-bond.
• The club is in good financial shape even with the continuing inflation.
• The greatest concern is the payment of dues. Dues collected so far are 50% below dues payment at this time last year.
• The Treasurer’s December Report was approved by the board.

• Bill is concerned the rising bus costs are making it almost mandatory that carpooling become the standard mode of transportation.  The board authorized this decision, carpooling or bus transportation, be decided by Bill trip by trip. Any contribution to the driver will be voluntary due to club insurance requirements.

 Friendship Committee – Henry Leimkuhler

• Henry received notice that Dick Gimigliano passed away December 22.  Dick was a long time and active member in the club and the 1994 club president.   Richard F. Gimigliano Obituary (1931 - 2022) | Marlton, New Jersey (echovita.com)
• The friendship committee was very active over Christmas and its work was greatly appreciated by the recipient members.

Lions 5K W&R run

• The directors voted to ask members to be race marshals at the Lions annual W&R race.

  New Officers

• Roger announced the new officers and board members for 2023. The officers and three-year board members will be installed at the January 12, 2023 Business Meeting.

 

Storage Shed

• The directors received a request from Bill Brown, who is also active in the Lions, to determine if the 65 Club was interested erecting a storage shed in the clubhouse backyard. The shed cost and associated cost would be shared by the Lions and the 65 Club. The Lions would have access to the shed and 50% of the storage capacity.
• The directors engaged in an extensive discussion of advantages and disadvantages of this proposal and whether to proceed with the feasibility and actual cost of the shed.  The directors unanimously voted against proceeding with this proposal because additional club storage space is not required at this time or in the immediate future.

Gas Stations

• An Ad Hoc Committee consisting of David Hunter, Publisher of Haddonfield Today, Sheri Seigel of Mabel Kay and members of the Historical Society of Haddonfield is preparing a pamphlet on the History of Auto Service Stations, Gasoline Filling Stations & Automobile Dealerships in Haddonfield. Any club member with knowledge of the history of these stations and locations is encouraged to contact Roger Jacobs, a member of the Committee, at 908 391 3661 or by email: brogerjacobs@aol.com

2023 Officers

• Roger reviewed the slate of officers and board members proposed by the nominating committee as follows:

New Board of Directors for Three Years.

At year end, actually at the January 12, 2023 Business meeting, the current Directors for One Year will have completed the last year of their one-year term. Walter Baker will not be renewing a three-year Board of Directors term but will continue to be an important and active club member! Thank you, Walt for many years of service!

Howard Rementer confirmed that he will continue to serve on the 65 Club Board of Directors in 2023 for a new three-year term. Thank you, Butch!

Henry Leimkuhler will not be renewing a three-year Board of Directors term but has agreed to continue his excellent service as Chairman of the Friendship Committee. Thank you, Henry!

Immediate past president. Frank Lodge, has agreed to serve on the 65 Club Board of Directors in 2023 for a new three year term. Thank you, Frank!

Abraham (Abe) Ferda of Cherry Hill has agreed to serve on the 65 Club Board of Directors in 2023 for a new three-year term.  Thank you, Abe!

The 2023 Board of Directors for Three years will include Howard Rementer, Frank Lodge and Abe Ferdas.

The current 2022 Directors for Three years, Rich Carney, Jay Cokos and Tom Diemer, have agreed to a new term in 2023 as members of the Board for a Two-year term.

The current 2022 Directors for Two years, Tim Barnes, Bernie Schaming and Al Schmidt have agreed to a new term in 2023 as members of the Board for a One-year term.

As immediate past president, Roger Jacobs will be a member of the Board for One Year

Officers for 2023 are:

Award

• Roger reviewed a recommendation by Bill Brown to present Mike Underwood with the Bill Hitchens Award for his outstanding service to the 65 Club over the years. The recommendation was unanimously supported and approved. Bernie will get the Plaque updated so it can be presented to Mike at the Christmas Luncheon.

Borough Building Scheduling System

• Bernie completed the initial scheduling of club events through year-end 2023. He tried scheduling it out for 10 years. However, the system could not accommodate this extension . Despite this, we still plan to be here for the next 10 years!

Historical Society

• Roger reported that he is seeking senior members who might have information on former gas stations/auto dealers in Haddonfield for a pamphlet a committee is working on for the historical society

Treasurers Report – Hank Zaleski

• The main receipt and expense item for November was the Wine and Cheese Party. As usual, Bill Brown managed the fees and costs so that the event was close to break even. The Treasurer’s November Report was approved by the board.
• Assuming no surprises in December, the club’s operating income will exceed forecast and expenses will be below forecast for 2022.
• The Operating Budget for 2023 was reviewed and approved. The balanced budget forecast for  2023 is $6400 in receipts and expenses.

• Dave thanked everyone who was so helpful the past year in helping him find weekly speakers.

Membership – Joe Galliera

• No new applications this month
• The Turkey Trot was a success with 10 volunteers from the 65 Club.
• The American Legion sponsored 5k run on December 10^th was also discussed. It was agreed that the Club would volunteer to work that event this year and in future years.

Events

Christmas Party – Jay Cokos

• The club’s Christmas party will be held on Thursday December 8 at the Methodist Church.
• An unwrapped gift of socks or something similar is welcomed.  This will be given to the Salvation Army
• Expecting 50-60 people
• Song books, plates and food ordered

 Friendship Committee – Henry Leimkuhler

• Henry is coordinating cookies and Christmas cards for homebound membersi

President’s Report – Roger Jacobs

Borough Building Scheduling System

• Roger informed the directors the borough was implementing an electronic scheduling system for the use of borough property.  This will replace the current email system.  The scheduling will be done through the borough website.
• The directors had a long and thorough discussion of how to use this system, who in the club should do the scheduling and the possible implications of using the Clubhouse.
• The directors appointed Roger and Bernie to perform the initial scheduling of club events.  They will report to the directors on how the process is done. Any issues or problems concerning the scheduling system will be discussed and responded to at subsequent directors meeting.

Officers

• A 2^nd VP candidate for next year is required. New and recent Haddonfield resident members are encouraged to apply.

Treasurers Report – Hank Zaleski

• This was an active month. Expenses were $2,228.75 and income was $1,703. The largest expenses were the Fall Luncheon and a deposit for the Spring Luncheon.  The largest receipts were from the Green Jar and the Fall luncheon.
• The club’s income and expenses still match the budget forecast. Income exceeds expenses however the cost of the new video equipment has not been received.
• A budget for 2023 is being developed. Members are requested to submit estimates for any capital improvements they believe are required.
• Hank purchased $9,000 worth of I-Bonds for the club.  This required cashing in about $8,000 in CD’s. The higher I-Bond interest rate made this change an improved investment.  The club still has $2,500 in a CD as a cash reserve. This issue was discussed under New Business in the September Minutes.
• The club does not have an assistant treasurer.  To obtain access to the I-Bond’s and CD, in the event of the treasurer being unavailable, Secretary Fred Willis will have backup access.
• The Treasurer’s October Report was approved by the board.

• Work is beginning on scheduling speakers for January and February.  This assists the incoming 1^st VP

Trips/ Events –

Christmas Trip

• Bill has arranged for a bus trip to Spring Lake for a Christmas lunch and show on December 6.  The cost is $100 per person and the club must guarantee 40 attendees.  The trip has been advertised in local newspapers.
• To date only eight (8) people have signed up and there is considerable concern from Bill about meeting the guarantee. The directors shared this concern and voted to authorize cancellation if Bill recommends this. Bill will make this decision based upon signups and when the club must pay for the trip.

Christmas Party

• The club’s Christmas party will be held on Thursday December 8 at the Methodist Church.
• An unwrapped gift of socks or something similar is welcomed.  This will be given to the Salvation Army

Wine and Cheese Party

• The club will hold its annual Wine and Cheese party on Saturday November 12 at 7:00 PM. It will be held at Grace Episcopal Church.
• Cost is $10 per person and wives are invited. Guests are free. A dessert or appetizer are accepted but not required.  Please notify Bill, if possible, if you plan to attend.  This is not necessary though and last minute attendees are welcomed.

Turkey Trot

• Joe Galliera requested assistance to help with the Lions 5K run.  This will occur on the Saturday, November 26, after Thanksgiving.
•  Club members should meet at the club house at 8:00 AM.  They will receive their location assignment, reflective vest and donuts at that time and a tee shirt afterwards for their assistance.  The run will finish about 10:30 AM.

Salvation Army Red Kettle.

• Al Schmidt informed the members the Red Kettle Christmas collection will be held at the Haddonfield Acme.
• The club will man the collection on December 16 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  Contributions will go to the Croc Center in Camden.
• Volunteers are required to man the Kettle.  A sign-up sheet is in the clubhouse or contact Al.
