February, 2021

The Board of Directors meeting of the Haddonfield 65 Club was held on Thursday February 4, 2021. The 65 Club clubhouse was closed due to the Corona virus shutdown. The meeting was conducted remotely using the Zoom program and was set up by Al Schmidt and Richard Bonnette.

President Frank Lodge called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM.   Roll was called and fifteen (15) board members, were on the call. Frank led the directors in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A compliment was made about Henry’s shirt.

The secretary read the January minutes and the Directors approved the minutes as previously distributed and posted.

President’s Comments – Frank Lodge

  • Frank was having computer problems which limited his initial comments.

Treasurers Report – Dave Tarditi

·        Dave informed the board of the following developments and expenditures.

    • One hundred thirteen (113) members have paid their dues for 2021.
    • There are thirty-six (36) unpaid members and ten (10) unpaid guest members.
    • Dave will begin the process of chasing down the unpaid members.
  • There was a discussion on whether the club should set up a PayPal account. Dave believes it is an unnecessary expense because few members have requested it.  Other members disagreed; they believe some members have not paid their dues because of the absence of PayPal. Both groups agreed to revisit the issue in the future if there is evidence either way.

·        The Directors approved the treasurers report.

Health & Welfare – Henry Leimkuhler

·        Henry reported on the following members.

    • Members who are in quarantine seem to be receiving the vaccine.
    • Dan Columbi is still having difficulties speaking and would appreciate a note.
    • Member Earl Slim died.

Speakers – Roger Jacobs

  • Roger reported the following developments
    • Rich Cunliffe will speak February 18 on his memories of Australia and the Outback.
    • Rich Carney will speak February 25 on Alaska.

Membership – Rich Bonnette

  • Rich made an extensive presentation on using zoom to expand the location of speakers, involve more members who live in assisted living facilities, record presentations so they can be shown later and involve more people from the general community.
  • The proposal initiated an extensive discussion on why, how and if this should be done. There was no resolution on the idea.  Rich will prepare a report with more details for the Directors by the next board meeting. The discussion will resume at that time.

Trips/ Events – Bill Brown

  • Bill reported the following developments
    • No trips are scheduled.
    • The Spring Luncheon is proceeding for May.  A speaker has been lined up and the menu will be presented next month.

Old Business

  • Bernie Schaming informed the Directors the florescent lighting change over to LED’s has been completed in the clubhouse.
  • The 65 Invites program idea of having activity by zoom to which the general community is invited is progressing very slowly. The idea of chocolate tasting or a cooking class is being delayed because the local merchants are very busy. It was also noted that, historically, activities that demonstrate something are generally more popular than activities where members participate.
  • The clubhouse was closed on the day it was last cleaned by a cleaning service. This service will resume when the clubhouse is reopened. The pinocle group that used to clean the clubhouse has decreased in size and become older and cannot resume the activity.  The club has the money to employ the cleaning service.
  • Money has been earmarked to provide any specialized cleaning due to Covid.  However. it was pointed out that Borough Hall was re-opened without a specialized cleaning. Based on Borough Hall it is expected no specialized clubhouse cleaning is required.
  • A 2021 Directory will be published. Members will be asked to add their cellphone numbers but that will be only a request.  Phil Kinsey and Bernie Schaming will handle the data base change requirement. Rich Bonnette will assist with the printing. Two hundred copies (200) will be printed.

New Business

  • The Salvation Army sent Bill Brown a thank you for the club’s Red Kettle assistance.
  • Bill Brown volunteered to donate a chess set to the club. Additional donations will be requested in the future.
  • Roger asked the board to approve John Donovan as a guest member.  The board approved the applicant.

The meeting adjourned at 11:15 AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Fred Willis, Secretary

President’s Comments - Bill Brown

  • Bill made his final comments as president.  Frank Lodge will assume the presidency next week at the business meeting.
  • Bill discussed how he wanted to expand activities and membership during this past year and Covid affected his actions and results.  He noted the club had a high mortality rate for the year losing 7-8 members to deaths. He thanked Roger for finding eight (8) new members in this difficult environment.  While trips were cancelled and activities were reduced or went into hibernation, the club added chess and Tai Chi to its activities to begin when the clubhouse reopens.
  • He thanked Bob Parsons for organizing the Fall luncheon at Tavistock and Al Schmidt for handling the Salvation Army Red Kettle fund raising. He informed us a cleaning service will clean the clubhouse once a month upon the clubhouse reopening..
  • He thanked Rich Bonnette and Al Schmidt for setting up and operating Zoom which has kept the club going.  Organizations without Zoom are struggling far more than the 65 Club

    • One hundred four (104) members have paid their dues for 2021. Two (2) new applicants have sent in their dues.

    • This expenditure is currently not in the budget but money is available. The money will be taken from the Trip fund.
    • The Directors approved $1,250 to install two storm doors.

New Business

  • Elmwood Hills Healthcare Center.
    • The club has collected toiletries and socks as Christmas presents for resisdents of Elmwood Hills Heathcare Center.  For several years there have been problems having the center take delivery of the presents even when delivery arrangements have been made.  This year was no different, delivery required two trips and even then, it was difficult to have the presents accepted.
    • The club feels these problems are unjustified and will begin looking for another place.
  • Monthly Zoom Activity
    • Frank presented a proposal for the club to have a monthly zoom activity which will be open to the general community. After considerable discussion the board approved the activity will occur on the second Thursday of the month after the Business meeting. A separate zoom link will be required for the activity.  If materials are required, they will be picked up the morning of the activity. Wives will be allowed to attend but not the general public.
    • Frank will develop a committee to assist him and arrange for chocolate tasting near Valentine’s day.
  • Roger asked the board to approve the following applicants for membership, Phil Ronkin, Joe Ligos and Joe Pugh.   The board approved the applicants.

The meeting adjourned at 11:08 AM.

    • Frank thanked Phil Kinsey for sending out numerous notices very quickly.
    • Governor Murphy issued new shutdowns orders which prevents the club from meeting at Borough Hall.   The order forces all speakers to present via Zoom. This shut down will cause a change in speakers since some speakers prefer to speak in person.  The December 17 presentation will be by John Cokos on running a restaurant and bar.  This is a change in venue.

    • No trips have been scheduled for December.

New Business

  • Howard Rementer asked who would decide the disposition of the club’s assets if the 65 Club had to dissolve. Should the disposition be added to the bylaws?  There was some discussion of this but the consensus and from experience was the Board of Directors would make this decision and no revisions to the bylaws is required.
  • The Nominating Committee presented the slate of officers for 2021 and the board approved them. The slate will be sent to members separately from the minutes.  One position remains open, that is the assistant treasurer.  Dave Tarditi will contact members who have joined the club within the last three years to find a candidate and involve the member in the club.

Information Sharing

  • No information was presented for sharing.

    • After some discussion, the board approved placing the organization’s name on the club website. A contribution will not be provided because it is not a local group.  The clubs’ history is providing financial contributions only to groups assisting local people.

    • Fifty-six (56) members have paid their dues for 2021.
    • The club lost $152 on the Fall Stag Luncheon due to no shows.  This was considered to be acceptable due to the importance of the members getting together socially.
    • The club received the defibrillator battery
    • Club income for the year has been reduced by about $700 while expenses are reduced by about $1,200. This means the club is making money during the COVID shut down.

    • The club is low on trifolds for distribution.  Bill will contact Joe Murphy to have additional trifolds printed.  John Cokos suggested the trifold message and format be reviewed.

Speakers

  • Frank Lodge informed the Directors that all presentations are filled through the fall.

Trips/ Events

  • Bill Brown reported the following developments
    • The October Stag Luncheon was highly successful.
    • The November Wine and Cheese party has been cancelled

  • Bill also informed the Directors he was still searching for a location for the November Wine and Cheese party.  Holding the party at Christ the King Church did not work out.

  • Saul has started writing biographies of recent new members which are being posted in the monthly newsletter.  His second bio was on Frank Lodge.

It appears the minsters and church boards are too busy working on virus issues than to discuss the feasibility of identifying the club on their website. Roger will contact the churches again in the future.

September, 2020

The Board of Directors meeting of the Haddonfield 65 Club was held on Thursday September 3, 2020. The 65 Club clubhouse was closed due to the Corona virus shutdown. The meeting was conducted remotely using the Zoom program and was set up by Al Schmidt and Richard Bonnette.

The secretary read the August minutes and the Directors approved the minutes as previously distributed and posted.

President’s Comments

Bill Brown informed the Directors that Frank, Roger and Jay have made calls to members to invite them to the fall luncheon.  However, two additional people are required to assist Bob Parsons.  Dave and Bernie volunteered to make the calls.

Bill also informed the Directors he was still searching for a location for the November Wine and Cheese party.  Christ the King Church is a possibility but, if available, requires a $100 insurance policy payment. This was a concern since no fee is charged for the party.  Bill would discuss this with the church and continue looking for a location.

Saul has started writing biographies of recent new members which will be posted in the monthly newsletter.  His first bio is on Phil Kinsey.

Treasurers Report

·         Treasurer Dave Tarditi informed the BOD the club was still in good financial shape.

·         The Directors approved the treasurers report.

Health & Welfare

·         Henry Leimkuhler reported on the following members.

    • Charles Legge was still waiting for a hip replacement
    • Mark Heston had been released from lockdown at his assisted living home
    • Don Beck was still in a lockdown.

Membership

·         Roger Jacobs was unable to attend the meeting because he was still in Canada.

Speakers

  • Frank Lodge informed the Directors he had speakers lined up into next year.

Trips/ Events

  • The October Stag Luncheon at Tavistock will be held outside under a tent.  Attendance will be limited to 80 people and unfortunately spouses will not be invited because of limited space.  The normal attendance is 120 people.  The luncheon cost is $30.
    • Frank proposed 65Club member Richard Bonnette be the speaker.  Rich will perform Mark Twain for the luncheon.  This motion was approved by the Directors.
    • Frank informed the Directors he was having a problem finding someone to play music at the luncheon.  It was mentioned the music was generally for guests, mainly wives, who are not being invited this year thus music was not required.
  • The November Wine and Cheese party is still scheduled if a venue can be found.  See notes under President’s Comments
  • The December Christmas party is still scheduled at the Methodist Church.  Frank will verify with Tom Mervine the day and location have been reserved.  A minster must be requested to speak.  Frank will discuss possible ministers with Roger since Roger has had considerable recent contact with the churches of Haddonfield.
  • No trips have been scheduled for December.

Old Business

  • None

New Business

·         Frank made a proposal to change the unofficial name of the club to The 55 Club.  He felt this would help attract members.  Bernie informed Frank the club’s membership had remained steady for twenty years with the current name. Since the current name has not affected membership and the proposed name created the impression the club was competing with other social clubs, such as the Lions, Frank withdrew his proposal.  The Directors thanked him for the idea and the time he spent in formulating the proposal.

·         There was a discussion among the directors on a possible membership problem.  This is the number of Haddonfield members vs guest members.  The club is attracting more men from outside of Haddonfield than Haddonfield residents.  This limits the number of guest members since guests cannot exceed 15% of the club membership.

    • Mike Underwood informed Henry several golfers were Haddonfield residents but not club members. Henry and Mike will investigate whether these residents will join the club.

·         Mike, who is active in the Historical Society of Haddonfield, wrote and had published an article on early uses of iron for the HSH.

·         The meeting adjourned at 10:34 AM.

Treasurers Report

·         Treasurer Dave Tarditi informed the BOD the club was still in good financial shape. Bernie had a question about contributions which Dave explained. It was merely an issue of reporting.

  • After a discsssuion the Board approved $400 for the following sponsorships. The board approved $100 to sponsor two girls.  The board approved $300 to partially sponsor one boy. The votes were seven (7) in favor an one (1) opposed.

New Business

·         The Lions club will not have a Flea Market in September this year thus the 65 Club is unable to join the Lions Flea Market.

·         There was a suggestion the 65 Club hold a yard sale or flea market at the clubhouse to replace the Lions Flea Market. After considerable discussion this was rejected.  There are too many problems for the club to successfully hold one.  Some of these issues were available space, having enough members willing to spend the day there and removal of non sold items.
